Dennis Silk's 80th Birthday Celebrations - Sunday 30th October

The Radleian Society hosted a celebration of Dennis Silk's 80th birthday on Sunday 30th October at Radley. Drinks in the Mansion Rooms were followed by a buffet lunch in Hall. It was a marvellous occasion with 240 present: family and friends, current dons and retired dons, ex-pupils and members of the wider Radley community. Hall looked splendid with four serving-points in the centre of Hall and the chance for guests either to move around (thanks to the 1970s retro-style wine-glass holders attached to the edge of plates!) or sit on the fixed benches at the sides of Hall.

The Catering Department had put on a first-class lunch and it was a truly memorable occasion.

At the end of the meal, after a welcome from the Warden, Ian Balding made the main speech of the day, and the Chairman of Council, Mike Hodgson, presented Dennis with a magnum of champagne. After prolonged applause Dennis moved forward to the dais to speak, but first, to considerable hilarity, slowly raised his eyes to the beam above his head. Had he spied a spi......?

He spoke with great warmth of his time at Radley and his love for the school and the community, and with Diana received the longest standing ovation anyone present had heard, even including party political conferences.

Dennis Silk requested that guests did NOT bring birthday presents to his 80th birthday celebrations.  Donations, if wished, can be made to The Silk Fund which provides bursaries for talented all-rounders whose parents could not otherwise afford the growing fees.
