CCF Field Weekend

CCF Field Weekend

Above: Removes try a weapons system for the first time

105 Removes, Fifth Form potential NCOs and 6.1 and 6.2 NCOs, our largest-ever number, spent two days at Bramley Training Area (4th-5th October) in Hampshire as part of Exercise FIRST ENCOUNTER. On the Sunday, 84 Removes were given a series of lessons and activities, including paintball, basha construction and basic survival, ration use and cooking, and basic movement with and without weapons, to enable them to begin operating in the field.

All of the Removes then participated in a tough team night navigation exercise, which required them to make their way around a designated course with a map and compass to find specific checkpoints. This activity forms part of the Army Proficiency Course (Basic), which all first year boys undertake and which tests their ability to communicate as part of a team, navigate accurately to specific grid references and cross uneven ground at night.

The following day, Monday, saw a more competitive edge to the activities with the focus on the application of skills learned the previous day, as well as a being a test of team (Section) cohesion and motivation. 6.1 and Fifth Form NCOs were placed with their sections of Remove boys and undertook more paintball firing (at targets in woodland), a burden carry race, incorporating some crawling across open ground against the clock, and team command tasks.

These lessons and activities were delivered by a number of the Radley CCF staff (Sqn Ldr Morris, Capt Pullen, Lt Martin, Mr Cavill and of course the RSM, Mr Healy) and NCOs to whom my thanks go for making the weekend such a success despite the rather inclement weather on the Monday morning.
