CCF Naval Section Trip to Portsmouth.
On Tuesday 20th February, the NCOs of the CCF Navy section travelled to Whale Island in Portsmouth for a field day. This involved a morning of learning about firefighting on board ships in the state-of-the-art fire school, which replicates compartments on board a warship such as engine rooms, machinery control rooms, mess decks, galleys and passageways. The afternoon was a visit to the Damage Repair Instructional Unit, which is a mock-up of a flooding ship which rocks and rolls as sailors try to plug gaps in the hull using wood. Split over three decks, the unit simulates compartments of a ship with water rushing in through various holes - a difficult undertaking and a chilly experience in February! Overall the day was a great success with all the boys and dons taking part, enjoying themselves and learning a great deal about safety measures on ships in the Royal Navy.
