Academic Departments
Classics
The Classics department is staffed by five full time, and one part time, member, in its own suite of rooms opposite Mansion. All boys study either Latin or Classical Civilisation in the Shell year, while some study Greek in addition. At GCSE, Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation are offered within the option blocks, with between 80 and 100 boys opting for one of the subjects. At A Level, Latin, Greek and Classics (in which both Classical literature in translation and Ancient History are studied) are offered, with between 20 and 25 boys usually opting for at least one Classical subject. All three A Levels are studied with a wide variety of other subjects, including modern languages, humanities and sciences. The subject naturally leads on to a number of courses at university, most commonly Classics, Ancient History or Archaeology.
