former diplomat and Climate Change campaigner John Ashton CBE (pictured with
brother, Andrew, Radley’s Bursar), who has been a special representative on Climate Change for three successive Foreign Secretaries, spoke to sixth-formers on Friday October 30th,
as part of the weekly 6.2 Lecture series.
Mr Ashton opened
his speech by challenging the theatre-full of sceptical Radleians to, in all
seriousness, 'occupy Radley'. This certainly aroused attention. We came
expecting a rather sober talk on climate change, with Mr Ashton being such a
front-runner in the field, but were surprised to be confronted with an engaging
questioning of our outlook on the world.
'revolution' is the only way that society can progress, and is the only reason
why it has done so in the past. He argued that we, as the next generation,
should be leading this effort. By discrediting our common perceptions of the
world, Mr Ashton gave us the chance to appreciate there being a different world
out there, which the Radley bubble will not shelter us from forever.
