On Sunday 13th March, John Emburey (the former England spin bowler) visited Radley as part of the Cricket Academy Coaching scheme. The Cricket Academy has run for a little over ten years and allows the most talented cricketers from across the age groups to train together and get some vital technical work done in the winter in preparation for the season. Andy Wagner raids his little black book of cricketing contacts and the boys benefit hugely from the enthusiasm, energy and expertise of those who give up their time so generously.
This year the squad has benefitted from a range of outside coaches and a particular thrill has been to see ORs Nick Gubbins (h, 2007) and Fred Fairhead (h, 2008) come back and contribute to the process that helped form them as players. The last session of the winter saw former Middlesex and England off-spinner, John Embury, join ARW and Jeremy Lloyds (Gloucestershire and Somerset) who has been a huge addition to the winter programme this year.
It was fantastic to see the boys working with real purpose to give themselves the best chance of success this season. First up is a trip to Dubai for the ARCH trophy before the season starts with the traditional curtain raiser against Charterhouse at home on April 12th.
