Economics
The dynamic nature of the subject of Economics means that we have to be increasingly creative in the way we attempt to solve the economic problems of recent years. The sovereign debt and Euro crises, the lack of credit, rising unemployment and inflation, yet falling consumer and producer confidence give rise to a need for innovative methods of solving these problems and a fresh look at the theory underpinning economic policy. Studying Economics A level allow students to begin to understand the problems that policy makers face and the implications of their economic decisions.
Economics A level is taught in the sixth form only, with approximately one third of the year group taking the subject. The department consists of four experienced dons and is fortunate enough to have a wide range of teaching resources and facilities at its disposal. We aim to teach this evolving subject area in such a way as to equip boys with the tools to interpret future developments and to allow them to carry these skills into their university studies and employment beyond. This includes many trips, essay and economics competitions, lectures, visiting speakers, Economics Society meetings and a wealth of IT based resources with a focus on live case studies and current affairs.
A significant proportion of the A level boys go on to read this, or related, subjects at university. The great advantage is that these skills and subjects are transferable and will thus be useful in every walk of life.
