The choir had a great day in Winchester cathedral, after a very quick and useful rehearsal in the afternoon we were feeling confident that it was going to sound pretty good. However, the performance began with some particularly tricky responses which we went into with all guns blazing and it was a perfect way to start the service. It far surpassed the rehearsals we had earlier on in the day. We then sang the Magnificat and the Nunc Dumittis by Murrell. This also went very well due to full commitment and delicacy with the piano moments.
Finally we sung the anthem ‘All wisdom cometh from the lord’. This has become a personal favourite for most of the choir. It allows us to really show the full force of a 120 person choir which is a rarity these days. Ethan Clarke sung a mature and controlled solo which echoed beautifully around the ancient cathedral. This anthem ends with an extremely demanding section - in the rehearsal this was the weakest piece that we sung but we seemed to be able to pull it out the bag when it mattered. It was a great day overall and hopefully the congregation went away satisfied having heard a top class performance.
