Fencing Club

Fencing Club

On Thursday 21st September, the Fencing Club had its first fixture of the year. The fixture was against Abingdon, a traditional heavyweight of school Fencing, which produces many top fencers each year.

Felix Rawlinson and Morgan O’Connell competed in the foil team, which was captained by Christoph Wallendahl. Wishing to better the previous year’s result, the team started strongly. It was a close match, with the lead alternating between the two teams. There were several very strong performances starting with Morgan O’Connell who scored six consecutive points which put the team into lead position. Felix Rawlinson later scored 6-0 winning one bout and this was followed by Christoph Wallendahl, who scored nine points in one bout putting the team one point ahead.

Going into the last bout, the team was one point down. It was always going to be a tough bout, with the two teams’ anchoring fencers facing off. Wallendahl started well, scoring several points to take the score to 41-40 to him. However, after several rushed attacks and strong fencing by his opponent, the Abingdon team narrowly triumphed, in what was their closest match yet this season.

In the epee match, the team of William Bao, Harry Bowesman-Jones, Alexander Dayes and Alex Cha fought a tough match. They put up a spirited performance, with Bowesman-Jones doing very well against the team’s top fencer, and Bao and Dayes scoring several very proficient hits. Cha consistently put pressure on the Abingdon team, wining several of his bouts, although eventually the greater experience of the Abingdon team showed through.

Overall, the match represented a significant improvement on the previous year’s result highlighting the recent major improvements made by the Club. We're looking forward to the coming season, and to our next match against Abingdon, whose fencers received quite a shock in their match. It was great to see Radley put more pressure on Abingdon than traditional fencing schools like Eton or Harrow. It bodes well for the future of the club, and we will all be looking forward eagerly to our next match against them!

Foil result 45 -41 to Abingdon
Epee result 26 - 45 to Abingdon
