On the evening of the 21st of April, the
French Society was lucky enough to host a translation workshop entitled
‘Translating the words, and everything else’ which was led by Dr Jennifer
Higgins. Dr Higgins is a literary, academic and general translator, who works
from French and Italian into English and she has recently finished translating
Emmanuelle Pagano’s book of short stories ‘Nouons-nous’.
We learned about a few of the many uncertainties of
translation and even had a go at translating some of Pagano’s stories
ourselves. While it must be said that some translations were a little more
abstract than others, we were all grateful for the rare insight into the
nuanced world of professional translation and it really was a wonderful way to
spend a Thursday evening.
