Real Tennis Consultant, Mick Dean commented:
With our top players unavailable to defend Felix White’s U18 crown from last year, Benedict Yorston (with a year in hand) carried the baton, but, feeling unwell, was barely able to complete his matches in the preliminary group.
In the U16 Event, Oscar white won two of his three matches though failed to qualify for the final group stage, unfortunately meeting the strongest opponent in his first match. Max Wetton, in a higher group only just failed to reach the finals, also winning two of three matches.
In the final group, Ed Crowston beat Max’s conqueror in a very tense 6/5 match, coming from 4/5 down and beating a very promising Etonian 6/4. He did lose to a very talented Victor Lethuilier, the French champion in his final match, though both qualified for the best-of-three set final. In this, Ed found himself 0-5 down, before gradually thinking his way into the match, forcing for the openings with more accuracy and control, and cutting the ball more decisively on the floor. At 1/6 4/4 it was anyone’s game, but after some truly excellent rallies, Ed just came short. He should be proud of a fine effort, and indicates what he could still achieve next year (his opponent is a year older!).
Four Radleians played for GB in International Junior matches on 18th August. Olly Martyn-Hemphill and Max Wetton played vs France, both losing over three close sets, while Felix White and Benedict Yorston played vs the USA, Felix losing in three sets while Benedict won 6-3 6-5, coming from 2-5 down.
