General Sir Richard Shirreff, former NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, spoke to an engrossed audience of dons and Radleians in the Theatre on Wednesday 6th December, during Academic Priority Time.
His theme: “Is war with Russia a fantastical notion”? His sobering conclusion: “I don’t think it is.” As he argued, “President Putin has started a dynamic which could put Russia on a collision course with NATO – particularly over the Baltic states.”
Throughout this fascinating talk, General Sir Richard Shirreff stressed the importance of maintaining a realistic NATO deterrent – at the same time underlining the need to “match deterrence with dialogue”.
The sheer number and range of questions from the audience was indicative of the fascinating nature of the material covered. There was much interest too in his recent publication, ‘War with Russia’ – which he referred to as “a tragi-novel written as a wake-up call.”
