Goalkeeping Masterclasses

Goalkeeping Masterclasses

On Thursday 10th March, Alex Welsh came to Radley College to hold two goalkeeper training sessions for the Radley College Football Club goalkeepers. Alex Welsh works at the Tottenham Hotspur academy, training young, talented goalkeepers in preparation for a career in the top flights of football. Mr Welsh is also involved in other aspects of the game, including being Chief Executive of the charity ‘London Playing Fields Foundation’. ‘London Playing Fields’ works to protect and maintain green areas in the capital, nurturing them to ensure they can host football, cricket and rugby games for a range of people, primarily the disadvantaged. Mr Welsh is very active in the charity and only the previous day had been with Harry Kane, the renowned Tottenham forward, opening a new playing surface in the city.

After having lunch with the Radley goalkeepers, who included the Junior Colts keepers up to the 1sts keeper, Alex Welsh headed out onto the playing fields to start the training sessions. All the boys were concentrated, listening to every word of Mr Welsh. The exercises included some crossing and corner simulation, with Alex Welsh assessing the catching and decision-making ability of the players. It was clear just how experienced and technically knowledgeable Mr Welsh was, even just a few minutes into the sessions, but tied in with his invaluable advice was an entertaining sense of humour which only served to engage the keepers even more. Over the half hour of each session, both groups were visibly improving and by the end, all aspects of their game had been enhanced in some form, by Mr Welsh.

A big thanks goes to Jamie Dalrymple, brother of Mr Dalrymple in the Modern Languages department, allowing the Radley goalkeepers to have a day of coaching with Alex Welsh. This was possible as Mr J Dalrymple actually won this day of coaching in a raffle, but he kindly donated it to Radley.
