H Social

Situated directly between Queens Court and Clocktower Court, opposite the David Rae Smith building and within a stone's throw of the Theatre and Silk Hall there is no denying that H is in the centre of the school.  Perhaps most importantly for boys, it is closest to shop!

H Social prides itself on having great diversity with an emphasis on the happiness and well-being of the individual.  There is a great sense of warmth and camaraderie and boys are encouraged to work as a team, particularly across year groups. It is certainly a Social for the all-rounder but is happy to champion the eccentric, never letting the diverse array of talents go to waste.  In the last few years H Social has had boys who have gone on to row for Great Britain and play cricket for Middlesex, and there is currently a fantastic crop of debaters and aspiring politicians.

As one 6.2 put it, “There is no better feeling than feeling at home away from home and this is exactly what H offers.  I don't want to leave”.

George May

Tutor of H Social

GHSM.May@radley.org.uk

Having graduated from Edinburgh University and LAMDA, I joined Radley in 2005 to teach Theatre Studies. I am a former head of PSHE Education and coach Rugby, Football, Cricket, make the occasional foray onto a basketball court and am a keen country sportsman.

Life in Social is lively to say the least, with four children and a cocker spaniel in tow, but the energy and camaraderie of teenage boys is reward in itself. Whilst I prepare boys for confirmation, Emi-Lou, my wife, can be found directing cookery classes and the children setting up the BBQ for Saturday evenings with the boys, come rain or shine.

Northumberland’s moorlands and beaches are a particular haven for the family, as well as the more temperate climes of North Cornwall, but if we are outdoors building a treehouse, chopping wood or on a good walk, the family pulse is racing.

Michael Noone

Head of Biology and H social sub-Tutor

MGN.Noone@radley.org.uk

I joined Radley as Head of Biology in 2011. I graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Biological Sciences in 2002 and have taught the subject in Oxfordshire schools ever since, picking up an M.Sc. in Education along the way. I am passionate about the natural world and am responsible for the much-loved biology animals which are a great favourite with the boys. I also run the Honduras Expedition and a wide variety of activities within the College, including the Biology Society, Fifth Form (academic) Society and Sub Aqua Club. I also help out with other things like Sailing and Roman Catholic Mass and, when not teaching, can often be found in H Social where I am Resident Sub-Tutor. When the boys are away I enjoy wildlife, travel, reading, history and all things baroque, especially the music.

Sally Shuckburgh

H Social Pastoral Housemistress

SAS.Shuckburgh@radley.org.uk

I joined H Social Team - George and Emi Lou May and Michael Noone - as PHM in September 2013. I have spent much of my previous career working in HR, most recently before Radley at St Aldates Church in Oxford. I’m married to John who is a wine merchant, have a daughter Roz who is a teacher and a gorgeous elderly Labrador called Charlie – Dog. I love being part of the H Social family and being able to encourage, affirm and help the boys. No two days are the same and it’s a great deal of fun!
