Competing in the Henley Royal Regatta is the culmination of a year's intensive training for the Radley 1st VIII. It was therefore no surprise that nerves were stretched to breaking point on the first day of the regatta, on Wednesday 29th June, especially as the crew had drawn one of the "selected" crews, Groton School from the USA.
Unfortunately this pressure affected our start and a nervous error from the crew meant that they were almost a length behind after the first 500 metres. However the crew rowed with maturity and composure, slowly but surely clawing back the deficit and drawing level just after the halfway mark. After drawing level, the crew soon pushed through and went on to win by almost two lengths in an excellent race which recorded the second fastest time of the day.
There was great support from parents, dons, ORs and friends for which the crew was very grateful.It was good to get through the first day and I'm sure the crew will be a little more relaxed for today's race which will be against another crew from the USA, Boston College.
