Academic Departments
History
The History Department is one of the largest at Radley, with eight full time members of staff. History is a compulsory subject in the Shell year and then is offered as an option at GCSE and A Level. It is a popular subject and nearly all boys in the Removes and Fifths opt to take History at GCSE. At A Level in recent years we have had nearly 70 boys in 6.1 and 6.2 choosing to take the subject.
The History curriculum at Radley is broad. By the end of his GCSE course a boy will have studied the major events and turning points of the twentieth century while at A Level early modern and late modern topics, as well as further twentieth century options, are offered. Both the GCSE and A Level courses provide breadth and depth, and facilitate an excellent understanding of the contemporary world. In addition, the study of the past develops skills of analysis, argument and organisation, vital skills and excellent preparation for a large number of careers.
