Final: F Social achieve the ‘Debating Double’
The Coffee Shop was full and there was an expectant atmosphere
for the Final of the Junior Debating Competition, on the evening of Wednesday,
June 15th. F Social beat B Social
in a closely-contested Debate. This means that F Social have won both Junior
and Senior Debating Competitions in the same academic year, 2016: an impressive
“Debating Double” in AJM’s final year as Tutor.
The Motion, proposed by the F Social team of Harry Glassey,
Will Dunhill-Turner and Christoph Wallendahl, was ‘This House believes the Olympic Spirit has died.’ Opposing the
Motion was the B Social team of Freddie Horler, Kevin Zhang and Harry
The Judge was Head of Debating, Yannis Gidopoulos, E Social
6.2, who gave a crisp and impressive adjudication, in the process revealing his
own high levels of expertise in this field. In the Chair was D Social’s Will
Shott. ‘Best Overall Speaker’ was adjudged to be Harry Vyvyan-Robinson of B (below). There
were many excellent contributions from the Floor, including those of Max Rumsey
who received a special mention from the Judge; but in the end, the ‘Best Contribution from the Floor’ Award went
to Zac Peskin, again of B.
At the end of the Debate, Yannis (bottom) was presented with a set of
Cuff-links by AC, in recognition of his highly-positive input into Debating at
Radley over the past five years: ever since first representing Radley, as a
Shell, at the ‘Blenheim Palace Public Speaking Competition’ in 2012.
