'Minimalism in Music'

Music don and internationally-performing musician, Alex Hawkins, gave a brilliant Gallery talk on Thursday January 28th entitled 'Minimalism: musical analogies of the Op Art movement'. Alex provided a fascinating explanation of what was unfolding musically at the same time as the Op Art movement and linked his comments to the poetry and architecture of the time. The boys were particularly fascinated by the legacy left by this music movement and its evolution into Techno and House Music. Alex and David Quinn also performed Minimalist composer, Steve Reich's piece 'Clapping Music' (below).  This was a challenging and fascinating way to spend half an hour in the Sewell Centre Gallery and was well attended by a good age range of boys.
