Radley travelled to Winchester College for the preliminary qualifying round of the National Schools Chess Championship and played three short matches in a Swiss tournament format. The team was Harry Bligh (captain), Charlie Pemberton, George Gent, Lysander Sandberg, Christoph Wallendahl and Harry Ward.
A 4-2 win in the first match was encouraging and although Winchester B beat us in the second match, Harry Ward recorded an excellent win on board three, with Christoph Wallendahl battling hard on board two for a draw. The final round saw us pitted against Winchester C. Harry Bligh and Harry Ward recorded wins but the match came down to Charlie Pemberton's match on board one. His win saw the match drawn at 3-3 and took Radley through to the next round of the competition.
