The following information is intended for new parents. Forms should be completed only after parents have received the New Boys Pack.
All boys take French during their first three years in the lower school. If your son is in the top French set, he will also study Spanish and German during the Shell year; if not, he will study French and one of the two ab initio languages i.e. Spanish or German.
As regards to those taking either Spanish or German, we try, as far as possible, to allow boys and parents to choose their preferred language. We cannot guarantee to meet their request, due to timetabling and staffing restrictions, but usually we manage to allow every boy to enjoy his first choice option.
Before you and your son discuss whether to choose Spanish or German for his second language please look at the links on the right side of this page. Spanish is always very popular but we would urge you to consider German when discussing the matter with your son as it is often wrongly dismissed as too difficult and less culturally relevant than Spanish. Should you have any questions about this issue please do not hesitate to get in touch with our Head of Modern Languages, Gabriela Porter.
