Away Match The boy was lying motionless on the pitch; the call went out for the doctor; the school doctor couldn't leave his room. The ambulance was called from the local hospital; in the meantime a parent on the touchline was summoned; she was a doctor - a gynaecologist - probably the finest dressed gynaecologist in the area. Initially I thought that she worked for an extremely upmarket hospital, since her white coat appeared to be made of the finest Cashmere; this was no hospital garment it was her casual wear. I suspect that she was ruing the choice of knitwear, since we were in deepest December, it was perishing cold and extremely muddy. No matter, she rushed out to the injured boy. She approached with some trepidation for he was lying motionless on the ground, she bent circumspectly, "Daniel can you hear me?", no reply or movement. "Daniel, can you move your feet, try hard, your right foot?"; there was no response, he lay there rigid. She tried again, "Daniel, can you try hard and move your toes?" Again with no response she started to look rather worried and started enquiring, in an urgent manner, whether the ambulance had been called and if so how long ago. She tried once again "Daniel, have a go at moving your toes". No response. At this point the master in charge of rugby appeared through the gloom. "His name is Guy!" he informed us. Quite who Guy thought the doctor had been talking to whilst he had being lying on the pitch is a mystery; perhaps an imaginary friend of the doctor or perhaps there was indeed a Daniel lying prone on the floor next to him, just out of his eye sight. Either way the doctor tried again "Guy, can you move your foot?" Quick as a flash the leg was raised. Relief all round. From a recent rugby away match, |
