When David Rae Smith retired from the Council, Micky Jones, the Bursar from 1974 to 1991, wrote: "David Rae Smith will be long remembered as an outstanding Chairman of Radley's Council. The College has notably prospered under his management and has never been more highly regarded within its league of similar schools. As an Old Radleian, and parent of three Radleian sons, his interest in the College has been consistent and of long duration. He has been a generous benefactor both in time and in kind. He has brought to Radley the expertise of a senior partner of an internationally distinguished firm of Accountants. His tenure of office has been strong and powerful; his conduct of proceedings firm and transparently fair; his support of successive Wardens clear and unwavering, to their great advantage, as each would testify. The College gratefully records its debt to this imposing but benevolent personality. As Boswell said of Johnson: he did not strut or stand on tip toe; he only did not stoop." An obituary will be published in The Old Radleian later this year. |
