Hugo Rutland Memorial Fund

The Hugo Rutland Memorial Fund, which was started in 2005 after the tragic death of Hugo Rutland (1974, B) in a swimming accident, has raised over £230,000 to date.

Throughout his life, Hugo was a great supporter of many charitable causes but the one closest to his heart was his old school, Radley College. Hugo loved Radley and in later life attributed much of his success and happiness to the lifelong learning it provided.

The fund, set up by Hugo's widow, Claire, and a group of friends, family and ORs, has been established to provide bursaries for boys who find themselves in unforeseen tragic circumstances and subsequent financial difficulty. It is also for gifted boys who could not otherwise afford a Radley education. The first Hugo Rutland Bursary was awarded in September 2007.

Initial donations poured in from family and friends, and the momentum has been sustained by further fund-raising as follows:

Half Marathon by Mrs Simon Drabble in 2006

"A Huge Night Out at Frankie's" - a dinner and auction in November 2006. This party raised over £50,000 and created fantastic goodwill among all those who attended.

10K Marathon by Lord and Lady Gillford and the Hon. Tamara Gillford in 2006

London to Tblisi, Georgia - a sponsored motor bike ride by Lord Gillford in August 2007

007 Party for teenagers in October 2007
In Hugo's gap year back in August 1980, he landed a part as an extra in the James Bond file For Your Eyes Only so the 007 theme seemed wholly appropriate.

Henry Rutland's 12th birthday disco in February 2008

280808 Party in August 2008 - a Chinese themed party for teenagers

The Rutland Fund continues to seek support from all those in the Radley community, especially those who knew and loved Hugo. If you would like to help, please contact the Radley Foundation and we will be happy to advise you on the best ways to give. The fund has yet to reach its initial target of £300,000 and therefore the fund-raising is ongoing. In order to ensure the fund will continue to grow and offer a life-line to other compromised families, it is hoped any beneficiaries and their families will, in the passage of time, enter into the spirit of the fund by considering their own fund-raising ideas to secure its future without having to diminish its capital
