£5 million needed for the first phase

We would like to create a number of Foundation Awards to attract especially talented boys to Radley regardless of the ability of their parents to pay, for example, those who might otherwise have gone to independent day schools or those currently in the maintained sector - the presence of such boys in the College can be an inspiration to all. The JVP Thompson Scholarship and Dennis Silk Award Trust funds have provided help in this area but the Council would like to increase its scale significantly. In the case of boys currently at primary schools, we would need to be able to provide finance for them to attend prep schools for two years before coming to Radley - a Continuation Award scheme.

Discussions with ORs and current parents have shown very considerable support for this idea but, at present, our ability to support such boys is limited by the fact that a significant proportion of Radley's current scholarships are funded from College income. We plan to release this income to benefit the College by supporting more boys through the Foundation.

Target
To fund fully:

  • Two Continuation Awards a year. Cost up to £12,500* p.a. for 2 years, for each Award.
  • Seven Foundation Awards a year. Cost up to £17,550* p.a. for 5 years, for each Award.
  • Two Foundation 6th form Awards a year. Cost up to £17,550* p.a. for 2 years, for each Award.

* based on fees for 2001/02

These Awards can be funded on an annual, recurrent basis or by building up the capital to provide sufficient income. To achieve all the above will require an annual income of approximately £750,000 or endowed capital of £22.5 million.

The Awards will be available for academic, musical, artistic and all-round ability. In recognition of the support from Old Radleians, we hope that it will be possible to make two of these Awards annually to boys with Radley connections, where suitable candidates present themselves.

It would give Radley great pleasure if Old Radleians or parents were to want to name these new Awards after themselves, members of their family, or perhaps a contemporary or a don whose presence at Radley made an impact on their lives. We like to recognise our benefactors and we feel that the sense of continuity that goes with named benefactions, many of them coming from those closely associated with the College, helps to make both past and present pupils aware of the affection that it inspires in so many who have been involved over the years. If you would like to know more about the possibilities for naming, please click here.

We also think it is important in this increasingly volatile world to build up the fund from which bursaries can be given to support boys at Radley whose parents meet unexpected hardship. There are no naming opportunities associated with this because such help, where needed, is given discreetly.
