| Biology at Radley is taught as part of a Co ordinated Science course which leads to the award of a dual grade in Science. It is a three year continuous course and much important work has already been covered in the Shells.
The Remove year focuses on plants and animals. We look at plant physiology, homoeostasis, response to the environment and various aspects of ecology. Discussion of environmental issues chimes with work on acid rain and greenhouse gases that has already been covered in Chemistry. In both the Remove and Fifth Form years the Biology Department devotes significant time to teaching boys to design and carry out experiments. In each Science boys must plan, carry out and report on core practical investigations in preparation for the practical papers. The work covered within Biology is essential to subsequent work completed within Chemistry and Physics. This work is also used to extend our use of ICT, particularly the use of spreadsheet and graphing packages. In the Fifth Form we focus rather more on human biology. We study human reproduction, inheritance and evolution, which inevitably leads us into DNA and genetic engineering and hence into much of the moral debate that already surrounds cloning and GM foods. The work of all three years is then brought together in our revision programme prior to the IGCSE exams in the summer. |
