| Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is intregrated into all aspects of life at Radley; classroom teaching, tutor groups, socials and games. The development of the whole person is central to Radley's education. LOWER SCHOOL PSHE Personal health issues relating to fitness, diet and disease are taught within the context of biology classes in the Shell, Remove and Fifth form. The biological impact of smoking, drugs and alcohol on human health are also dealt with at greater depth than the GCSE curriculum requires. Similarly, sexual health is considered with regard to puberty, contraception and disease. To complement these biological elements, form masters, who meet once a week with a group of eight boys from one social, follow a programme of discussion topics using well-chosen resources from the Library. This small, close and unstreamed grouping promotes more individual response and thought about the range of topics covered. In addition, specialist speakers from Quit (smoking), the NHS community addiction team, a Harley Street rehabilitation clinic and Chain Reaction (a health education theatre group) give presentations and hold workshops over the course of the three years. The strong games tradition at Radley ensures that all boys will be introduced to the principles and techniques of fitness training and are warned of the dangers of performance-enhancing drugs. |
