Every week, for the Monday Activities Volunteering Programme, four of us take a quick five-minute walk down the road to Radley Primary School.
Upon arrival upto thirteen children, aged from four to ten, will usually be running around hall playing tag. Somehow, every week without failure, we manage to calm them down and split them into about four groups. We have got to know them well over the weeks which has helped us to judge who works best with whom.
We set up the chess boards and organise matches between the children. However, chess is just
the activity; the challenge is getting the children to work with each other and advance their thinking skills.
Having fun is, of course, essential. There is also a lot of light-hearted competition and every time the children have been keen to come back for more and to advance their skills.
