On the afternoon of Wednesday January 27th a team
from the Charity ‘Skiing with Heroes’ - former Radley Parent, Anna Gage, former
Greenjacket Harry Long and Bart Borchardt - visited Radley to tell boys and
dons about this Charity’s aims and activities.
Each February, for example, ‘Skiing With Heroes’ takes a party
of disabled ex-Service men and women to Klosters in Switzerland and helps them build
their confidence and sense of self-esteem by learning to ski, with the help of
Harry told us about his background as an ex-soldier, who had
served in Iraq and Northern Ireland, then had a serious accident, breaking both
his neck and spine, while on special forces’ training in the Brecon Beacons.
The Charity helps disabled ex-soldiers find jobs; so far it
has successfully placed people in Law firms, in Estate Management and even the
House of Lords.
The stories Harry, Bart and Anna all told of the determination
of people like “Derek” and “Andy”, who won two Gold Medals in the Invictus
games, proved an inspiration to all present. Bart closed by urging the audience
to “have a think about how you can help those less fortunate. At the same time,
think about your own sense of purpose.”
