The Monro Lecture

The Monro Lecture

On the evening of Monday, May 16th, the final English Department Monro Lecture of the academic year in the Blue Room featured English don, Mr Barfield, on an intellectual journey through the ins, the outs and the prejudices of ‘Anti-Catholic Literature’.  Selecting from a “random selection” of works, “namely A Level set texts”, those present were treated to an hour of stimulating, informative and aggressively humorous analysis of John Milton, John Ford and Charles Barnsley, to name but a few.

Regular declamations of key passages - for example, from Jonson’s ‘Volpone’ - by members of the English Department, complemented the professional and open-minded approach to what is a demanding topic.  The talk concluded a year of fascinating lectures, and the Radley career of a highly-intelligent, modest, and entertaining don, who will be sorely missed.
