On Wednesday evening, October 28th, the Philosophy Society
followed up its group discussion of the theme of 'Justice' with a very
entertaining talk by Dr Hawkins.
This put forward some views on the merits
of punishment and the criminal justice system, which much of the audience
had not considered before: looking at each argument for the existence of
punishment (to deter, to rehabilitate and to incapacitate) and
highlighting their philosophical and practical problems, in an eye-opening, if
slightly controversial, talk.
