Over the Bank Holiday weekend Paul Fernandez (don) won the ‘British Ultra Distance Trail Running Championship’. It was a non-stop race along the 86 miles of The Ridgeway National Path. This was the strongest field of athletes ever assembled on the start line of this race. (Paul was only predicted a top-10 finish by the Race Director.)
Some of the runners went off at a blistering pace. Paul had to ‘let them go’ and stick to his race plan, not expecting to see them until after the finish. However, he took the lead after 35 miles and kept pushing, as he did not want any of the runners behind to sense that they were catching him. In fact he extended his lead and crossed the finish line just before 2am on Sunday morning. His winning time of 13 hours 39 minutes was 44 minutes ahead of the second-placed runner, and was an hour faster than his winning time last year.
