For the first half of Leave Away, 24 boys and 4 dons enjoyed a busy week in the USA visiting Washington D.C., Philadelphia and New York. RKM and TCL have now clocked up 7 of these trips and and it was clear from their careful preparation and detailed planning that they were determined to allow the group to make the most of their time away. Highlights included a tour of the Capitol building, the Supreme Court and the White House, a visit to all the Washington monuments, to the Smithsonian museums, the National Archives and Arlington Cemetery and stimulating talks from Mr Ziad Ojakli, Head of Ford’s Global Government and Community Relations team, Professor Adam Shiengate, Chair of Political Science at Johns Hopkins University and a group of speakers from the British Embassy in Washington. We were also treated to an ice hockey match between the Washington Capitals (go Caps!) and the Toronto Maple leafs, a tour of Independence Hall in Philadelphia a ride up the Empire State Building and a trip to the 911 museum as well as walk along the New York High Line and show on Broadway. It was a hugely stimulating week, a great opportunity to grasp some sense of the impact of the new administration since Donald Trump’s inauguration in January and I doubt any of us will forget watching the sun set on the Jefferson memorial, magical!
