Ultra Distance Trail Running Success

Ultra Distance Trail Running Success

Congratulations to Biology don, Paul Fernandez, who has won the the ‘UK Ultra Distance Trail Running Championships’ – a UK Athletics-ratified race along the 86 miles of the Ridgeway National Path, from Ivinghoe Beacon to Avebury.

Commenting on his achievement Paul said:

“I started off conservatively, reaching the second checkpoint 4 minutes behind the then-leaders.  I managed to work through the field, taking the lead before CP4, and then extended this as the race went on, ending up with a 51-minute gap between myself and second place.  My time was not incredibly fast – 14 hours 38 – but my aim was to hold onto the lead, rather than post a fast time and risk crippling fatigue.

“So I am now the British Champion, and will be until next August.  I am obviously very pleased, and never thought I would ever be a ‘British Champion’.”
