Citizenship
There are three criteria for ‘Effective Education in Citizenship’: social and moral responsibility; community involvement; political literacy.

The first of these criteria is of prime and fundamental importance to Radley. It has sought to teach these values for over 150 years, and the centrality of Chapel, and emphasis on decency and tolerance to all in every aspect of boarding life, continues to underpin the institution. In the classroom, Religious Studies lessons address the effects of Christian belief on behaviour, attitudes and lifestyles, whilst Science lessons discuss developments which challenge our moral positions, such as genetic engineering. History and English in Lower School raise issues of Civil Rights, race, and tolerance through understanding each other. Outside the classroom each Social Tutor and his team aims to develop tolerance, independence, decency and caring for each other, to produce balanced, socialised people.

The second criterion, community involvement, has been an aim of the school for decades. All boys are involved in the Community Action Programme which gives opportunities to help with domestic projects as well as overseas. There is a lively social services programme on Wednesday afternoons, visiting, befriending and helping the elderly. The whole school takes part in charitable events: £38,000 was raised in 2000 by a 20 mile sponsored walk for Hope and Homes for Children. Many boys take part in working for the community through the Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Political literacy - how pupils might make themselves effective in public life through knowledge, skills and values, centres in the classroom on learning about forms of government, political structures, economic and environmental issues across several subjects. These are backed up practically through learning to present arguments and to understand both sides of an issue through lively debates and mock-elections. The Sixth Form Lecture Programme allows boys to hear some of the best and most skilled contemporary speakers address key aspects of social and political concern.
