Careers Department
AIMS OF THE DEPARTMENT
There are several principles which fit in with the general educational aims of the school. It is not purely a Department that gives information about work but one that helps the boys develop an awareness of themselves. The aims of the department can be loosely described as giving boys:
  • knowledge and information about different career areas so that they are more able to make a suitable choice at a later stage in their lives
  • guidance in their choice of course at A Level and in higher education
  • training in application form, CV and interview techniques. This is useful for UCAS, Oxbridge and for Gap year application
  • assistance in undertaking suitable and beneficial work experience
  • help in life and managerial skills
  • help in finding out where their potential lies and guiding them accordingly
  • team building and leadership skills training

It is important to stress that we are not attempting to point boys in the direction of specific careers - it is far too soon for that - but we are trying to make them aware of the choices that they may have and encourage their decision-making abilities. The competition that currently exists in the world outside Radley is getting ever more challenging and it is hoped that the boys will be more prepared having passed through the Career programme.

In their five year period at Radley the boys should experience all of the following:

  • self awareness exercises
  • career awareness sessions
  • software packages and HE course finder programmes / databases
  • Morrisby Test (psychometric) and follow-up interview
  • work experience / Community Action Programme
  • VI.1 Choices Conference (Radley's Careers & Gap convention)
  • interview techniques course
  • MTC team building exercises

They will also have the option of experiencing:

  • various enterprise schemes run by Departments
  • visits to industry and commerce
  • seminars about different career options
  • advice on how to structure and organise a Gap year
  • guidance interviews on individual problems (choice of options, A Level, work experience, HE courses, university or careers in general) during Careers Surgery

There is growing global involvement and it is quite possible that visits and work experience may also occur abroad. If a boy indicates his desire to take work experience abroad we will help him find a suitable position and he will be encouraged to do so.
