GCSE Drama is an exciting, but serious, course for all those with an interest in theatre and the process by which a play transfers from the page to the stage. It is not just aimed at those with skill in acting, and although there is a requirement to perform as part of the exam, there is a chance for those with technical and designing skills to put these into practice too. Much of the course and exam is conducted as part of a team and thus good communication skills and an ability to work well within a group is an essential requirement. This course looks at a great variety of drama and although rigorous can be hugely enjoyable.

The course divides into six units which are taken at various stages through the two years. These include two pieces of written coursework, one of which is an extended theatre review, two practical pieces of work, one devised and one scripted, and a written exam based on the detailed study of two texts. There is an opportunity for play writing to be assessed as part of the course and pupils are also expected to be able to write self analytical evaluations of their own contributions to the various projects. 60% of the course is internally assessed with the remaining 40% externally marked.

The course will require participation in theatre trips and it is helpful, though not obligatory, to become involved with College productions in some capacity in order to enhance the classroom experience of drama.
