| STATEMENT OF PASTORAL AIMS Between the ages of 13 and 18 boys are at Radley for the majority of their time, and it is our aim to see that they are happy, fulfilled and that they develop their individual talents. The school has always prided itself on the excellent relations between boys and the teaching staff and is aware that William Sewell founded the school with the aim of countering the barbarism of many 19th century public schools. Boys live in Socials (boarding houses) and are looked after by a Tutor (housemaster). Within each Social there are a resident Sub-Tutor (assistant housemaster) and a Pastoral Housemistress whose main duty is to look after the boys in her care. Senior boys are given responsibility as Prefects in helping to run the Social. For the first year boys live by day in a common room (Social Hall) and sleep in cubicles in small dormitory areas. From the second year on they are in bedsitters. Each Social has public areas and rooms (games room, cocoa room, etc.) Boys are encouraged by their Tutors to take part in sports and activities and to pursue hobbies and other interests, and so to develop their talents and gain confidence. Central to our pastoral practice is the belief that if relations and communications are good between boys and adults, and if boys have respect for each other and a positive attitude towards their time here many of today’s problems (bullying, selfishness, drugs, etc.) will not take root. At the heart of Radley life is Chapel with daily weekday services for the whole school and families joining us for Sung Eucharist on Sundays. |
