The Radley Art Department, housed in the Sewell Centre, promotes a learning environment that encourages boys of all ages to interact and engage with art practice at all levels, from practical construction through to art aesthetic appreciation. It is a place where exhibitions, competitions and gallery talks all exist to offer the modern Radleian an opportunity to interact with his surroundings and community in a holistic manner.

The Art Department is staffed by teachers, artists-in-residence and an Art Historian, all of whom have a wide range of expertise. The Sewell Centre facilities include a purpose built gallery, lecture room, film media and lecture suite and studios for ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography, painting and drawing. In addition, there is a well resourced art library and studio space for our artist-in-residence.

All boys in their first year have two periods of practical Art per academic cycle. Art is available at GCSE, AS and A level. Art history is available at AS ans A level. Each year a number of leavers go on to pursue a career within the arts, either at university or art school. There are numerous highly distinguished Old Radleians who have firmly established reputations within the Art World (eg. Sandy Andrew, James Nairne, Hamish Mackie, Alaistair Mackie, Shaun Henry, Charlie Langton, Oliver Cooke and Charlie Mackesy).

Outside of the Art Department there are further opportunities for Radleians to engage with the subject. Art is displayed all around campus and local artists visit regularly to talk in detail about their inspiration, muse and work. Art appreciation seminars take place as well as introductory talks on Western Art and Architecture. There are numerous trips to view both public and private art collections around the world. Recent trips have included galleries in London, New York, Beijing, Amsterdam, Rome and Florence.

A weekly drawing class is available along with a scholars' weekend workshop to provide Radleians of all abilities the chance to explore and develop their own creativity. A college wide photography competition allows both Radley staff and pupils the opportunity to exhibit their skills. The Charlie Musset Drawing and Travel Bursary is awarded annually to a Radleian who demonstrates considerable drawing talent and enthusiasm towards the subject. The follow-up to this award takes the form of an exhibition of work inspired by the recipient's travels.

The Art Department currently hosts two artists-in-residence who teach in the Lower School. Alongside their teaching duties they are encouraged to develop their work based upon experience and inspiration. Radley not only offers this residency program to emerging artists, but also to artists who may already have well established careers. In recent years the artists-in-residence have included a fine artist from Mumbai, a mixed media artist from Australia, a woodblock printmaker and the winner of the 2006 Commonwealth Art and Craft Prize for Textile and Mixed Media Work.
