Wallingford Regatta at Dorney Lake , Eton

SUNDAY MAY 4, 2008

DRAW FOR RADLEY CREWS

Because of the recent rain the ground at Dorney is fairly soft, so you will not be able to park near the Radley tent. The regatta organisers are working hard to make sure that they can park everyone with the minimum of damage to the grass.

So, please, pay attention to the marshals, and only park where directed.

Food for Rowers at Regattas

We have had a number of enquiries about picnics at regattas.  Contrary to current myth there are no prescriptive rules.  So for the avoidance of doubt here are some general pointers.

·            RCBC will provide each boy with carbohydrate rich food for the day typically consisting of pasta salad, fruit – bananas or dried fruit - energy/cereal bars and lots of water.

·            Boys very much appreciate their parents bringing more of the same - especially fat-less sponge with jam, Kellogg's Nutri-Grain bars, Kellogg's Rice Krispie Squares , McVitie's Go Ahead range of snack bars, biscuits and cakes, Jacob's Vitalinea bars, Jordan's Frusli and Crunchie bars or any own brand equivalent from Waitrose, Sainsbury or Tesco. You will find that boys will be encouraged to eat a snack as soon as possible after race as long as there is a gap of about two hours before the next race.

·           In addition sports drinks like Lucozade, Gatorade or Isostar are very welcome.  Likewise Pitta bread, pasta or rice salads or couscous, with low fat dressings and lean meat are always popular, tasty and quick.  Sandwiches and wraps are fine if the fat is kept down and no mayo.  Pies and processed meat should be avoided until after racing.

·           After the regatta, whatever your son fancies does him good.  He is rowing to have fun.  If chocolate, brownies, burgers and bangers are seen as rewards; then after racing all of these are great; plus anything else that teenagers like. Please none of these during racing.

·            Alcohol of any kind, however, should not be included as a celebration or commiseration.

·            There are, naturally no restrictions, on what parents or coaches consume!

As the boys progress through the Boat Club – particularly if they take rowing seriously – then what they eat becomes more important. That said, high carbohydrate - low fat is the key.  If you want to know more please download Director of Rowing, John Gearing’s succinct guide to nutrition - http://www.radley.org.uk/pages/sports/boatclub/nutrition.html
