On 19th April, the OR cricket team, Radley Rangers CC, returned to Radley for a match on Bigside, facing the College 1st XI. After a sizzlingly close match, the 1st XI won by 3 wickets.
Match report from Jonty Robinson (2012, K), Secretary of the Radley Rangers:
What a brilliant day it was to kick-start the Rangers’ season. The sun was out, and the Rangers won the toss and elected to bat first.
Thanks to both openers scoring a run a ball 20’s, the Rangers found themselves 40-0. Unfortunately, to some keeping low, many early season blues and some deciding to turn into prime KP (@rorytomlin) the Rangers found themselves at 90-5. However, enter the anchor man! Jack Folkestone (2012, E) produced one of the classier Rangers knocks, anchoring the innings with Zac Carter (2016, J) until lunch, leaving us 140-5. With 20 overs after lunch, some sublime ball sticking from Zac Carter and some brilliant placement from Jonty Robinson (2012, K) the Rangers finished with a very respectable score of 256 all out.
Having had a stretch and a bowl, the Rangers started with Jonty bowling from the pavilion end; clearly the amount of threes that Jonty had to run was taking its toll. Behind the stumps, Ed Wakefield (2009, H) was doing a superb job on the long barrier. Ed Horsfield (2018, G) opened up with Jonty and got the ball to move, getting on the openers with a beautiful inswinger. However, the Radley 1st XI number 2 and 3 put on a lovely partnership, getting themselves to 101-1.
With some quick wickets before tea, thanks to Oliver Martyn-Hemphill (2012, F) and George Greville-Williams (2012, K), the Rangers were back in the game. It was a spin game after tea with Ollie and Grev holding down ends, and plenty of chances being put down. The early-season fielding seasons have been going well for the boys… The 1st XI batted well and always looked in control; however, the Rangers managed to bring the game back, thanks to a brilliant run out from Keeper Ed Wakefield and a couple of quick wickets stemming the flow of runs.
Unfortunately for us, the boys managed to get across the line with 3 balls to spare. Congratulations to them, and we wish them the best for the season ahead!
