OR Rugby Sevens Round-up

Members of the OR Rugby Club, the Serpents, have been busy on the pitch in the last few weeks. Hugo Eyre (2012, F) and Nikita Tutus (2018, F) update us on their activities.

Lloyd’s 7s brings together ORs in the City

Three Old Radleians represented insurance broker Gallagher at this year’s Lloyd’s 7s tournament, with Hugo Eyre (2012, F), Matt Chapman (2014, G) and Harry Wilson (2018, G) all taking to the field.

Gallagher recorded a victory over Marsh, and a loss to Miller & Pantheon, before narrowly missing out by a single point in the semi-finals.

The Lloyd’s 7s is a long-established tournament contested by insurance firms. If there is ever a place to see ORs, it is at this event. I must have bumped into more than 30 who work in insurance in London who had come to watch.

 

Serpents reach Richmond semi-finals

It was a HOT day on 30th May 2026. Our first game was against Schofield 7s, a formidable and familiar opponent. Clearly a far better-drilled side, however the Serpents fought back with some inspiring joué champagne rugby.

Managing from the sidelines was Patrick Hughes (2018, G), who was able to get some great footage of the games, which has been compiled and will be shared on social media soon – find us on Instagram: @radleyserpentsrugby

We drew the first game and then won the next two, which got us into the semi-finals of the Cup competition. Our opponents seemed to have a kick-off that came back to them every time, which rendered us on the back foot for the majority of the game. We got close and scored a few great tries, although we were let down by a few decisions from the referee, namely a yellow card for Richie Horton (2011, K) following a hilarious trip that could be seen from the other side of the pitch.

We ended up losing the game, which was disappointing. However, we proved to be a very competitive side with plenty of depth.

After the game, we travelled to Angus Couttie’s (2018, G) house for a sensational BBQ, which was very kind of him to host. On the way there, we named Rory McNair (2018, G) our man of the tournament after he scored one of the most unprecedented tries of the day. Meanwhile, Joss Gillingham (2019, G) was awarded the less prestigious DOD for providing us with a lovely montage of what a prop was able to do on a 7s pitch (which is to say, limited amounts).

It was a great day, and we are now looking forward to hosting a social event in London in late July!
