Welcome to Mr Ed James who assumes the role of Deputy Head (Pastoral) at Radley this week. Ed will be collaborating closely with Ben Holden, our current Sub-Warden. This strategic approach ensures a thorough handover period ahead of Ben’s retirement, with Ed taking full responsibility for his role from September 2024. This ensures the continuity and excellence of the pastoral care and safeguarding practices that lie at the heart of our provision.
Before arriving at Radley, Ed was Head of Sixth Form at Millfield and sat on the school’s senior leadership team and executive leadership group. Millfield has a Sixth Form of over 600 pupils, a significant majority of whom are boarders and he was responsible for their development over the two years both pastorally and academically, working with and leading housemasters and other staff in that task.
Prior to Millfield, Ed started his teaching career at a leading state school, Pimlico Academy (Politics and Geography) before joining Merchant Taylors’. There he served as Head of Politics and Assistant Head of Upper School. He has degrees from Exeter (BA in Politics) and UCL (MSc in Public Policy). As a boy, he was brought up in a boarding house at Canford, where his father was a Housemaster and where he went to school.
Ed is married to Daisy and they have three children.
