On a sunny Sunday afternoon, the Mariners assembled outside the Radley boathouses for a much-anticipated clash on the water. Both crews faced last-minute substitutions, but spirits remained high.

The coin toss went in favour of the 1st VIII – the Gladiators – who chose the Kennington station. With the official race distance agreed at 500 metres, the Legends were briefed by Mr Duggan. He reminded them that while sledging would be encouraged, foul language would not be tolerated, and all “blows” must be above the belt.

As both crews took to the water and went through their warm-up routines, they looked evenly matched. However, during a practice start, the Legends unintentionally revealed their hand when a crew member asked, “Are we doing a cheeky start or a real start?” This raised suspicions among the Gladiators about possible gamesmanship.

Given the bend in the 500m course favoured the Kennington station, the Legends were granted a quarter-length stagger on the start line. Chief umpire Mr Townsend oversaw proceedings. As he called “Attention!”, the Legends jumped the gun slightly, taking their first stroke before the “Go!” – giving them an early half-length advantage. When the official start was called, both crews powered off cleanly, displaying serious intent.

Over the first minute, the Gladiators methodically reeled the Legends back in. As the final 200 metres approached and the bend came into play, the 1st VIII edged into a narrow lead. The Legends mounted a fierce final push for the line, but it wasn’t enough. The Gladiators crossed the finish victorious – their reputation intact – with a winning margin of just two feet.

The rest of the afternoon was a thoroughly enjoyable occasion, rounded off with refreshments on the riverbank and shared camaraderie among all involved.
