The RadSoc Archives talks continued with a deliciously nostalgic look at one of Radley’s most-loved institutions: Shop.
For generations of Radleians, Shop was more than a place to grab a snack – it was a haven between lessons, a moment of respite in the long hours between meals, and a source of cherished ritual. Boys queued eagerly for Wagon Wheels, Wall’s ice creams, and cans of Coke, while the iconic 1990s chicken roll inspired a daily stampede at 10.44am.
Led by College Archivist Clare Sargent, the event journeyed through over 170 years of Shop history, from the early days of “Jam Money” to the familiar favourites of the 1900s and 2000s. Old Radleians joined the conversation with warmth and humour, recalling the comfort Shop offered – not just in snacks, but in atmosphere, a treasured space away from the pressures of the classroom. Memories were shared of Mr Whitbourne, shopkeeper from 1954-74, known for his classic phrases: “All you break you pay for” and “Time, gentlemen, please.”
As always, the discussion helped add rich detail to the College’s ongoing oral history. We’re grateful to all those who took part, and we invite the wider Radley community to continue sharing their memories – especially those that involve iced buns, fizzy drinks, and the quiet joy of a break from the school day.
A recording of this event is available below and can also be accessed via the Radley Then & Now playlist on YouTube and as a podcast on Spotify.
Our next Radley Then & Now event will take place in the Michaelmas Term, and will focus on Radley Cricket. If you have memories that you would like to share on this topic, we would love to hear from you.
